  • 2nd-half run lifts South Alabama by Arkansas 74-61
    posted on November 29, 2009 - 02:50:03 pm

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Martino Brock scored 21 points and South Alabama rallied back from Arkansas' furious first-half surge to win 74-61 Sunday.

Bad starts to both halves doomed the Razorbacks (2-4), who have lost three consecutive games to mid-major opponents at home in the last six days.

South Alabama (6-2) took a 22-6 lead out of the gate.

Arkansas got back into the game with a 22-1 run over a 5:02 stretch and led 34-30 at halftime.

But South Alabama countered with a 17-0 run of its own over a 5:46 span in the second half to break a 40-40 tie.

Arkansas hit just six baskets after intermission and shot a season-worst 35 percent.

Rotnei Clarke led the Razorbacks with 19 points as Arkansas played without senior center Mike Washington, who aggravated a back injury in warm-ups.

Bryan Sherrer and Tim Williams each added 11 for the Jaguars.

  • LSU survives Arkansas comeback bid, 33-30 in OT
    posted on November 28, 2009 - 08:05:03 pm

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Josh Jasper hit a 41-yard field goal with 4 seconds to go to force overtime, then made a 36-yarder in overtime to lift LSU to a 33-30 victory over Arkansas on Saturday night.

Alex Tejada missed a 36-yard field goal that could have forced a second OT, and Arkansas (7-5, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) just missed a remarkable comeback bid, highlighted by Ryan Mallet's fourth-down touchdown pass to Joe Adams with 1:18 left, which gave the Razorbacks a 30-27 lead.

Jordan Jefferson threw for touchdown passes to Brandon LaFell and DeAngelo Peterson, and Trindon Holliday had an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown for LSU (9-3, 5-3), which could sneak into a New Year's Day bowl game because of Mississippi's loss earlier Saturday.

  • East Tennessee State defeats Arkansas 94-85
    posted on November 27, 2009 - 07:45:09 pm

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Tommmy Hubbard scored a season-high 32 points and East Tennessee State overcame an early deficit to hand Arkansas its second consecutive home loss 94-85 Friday night.

Hubbard led the Buccaneers (3-3) in a sizzling night from behind the arc, hitting five 3-pointers as East Tennessee State nailed 11 of 14 3s as a team.

Arkansas had won 45 consecutive nonconference home games before the recent two-game losing streak and hadn't lost a nonconference game in Bud Walton Arena under third-year coach John Pelphrey before this week.

The Razorbacks (2-3) got 32 points from Rotnei Clarke in the loss, with the sophomore hitting on 10 of 17 3-point attempts while the rest of the team made just 1 of 10 from 3-point range.

  • Arkansas visit has high stakes for Miles and LSU
    posted on November 27, 2009 - 04:15:02 pm

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU's two-game losing streak in the Southeastern Conference ruined the Tigers' chances of even a second-place finish in the league's Western Division, and likely cost LSU a New Year's Day bowl.

Yet, in some ways, the slide has raised the stakes for head coach Les Miles heading into the 17th-ranked Tigers regular season finale against Arkansas on Saturday night.

If LSU falls to the Razorbacks for a third straight time, the Tigers will have gone 7-9 in the SEC in the past two seasons. That certainly wasn't what LSU boosters expected when Miles' salary ballooned to $3.75 million after the Tigers' national championship two seasons ago.

Miles' critics seem emboldened even more after LSU's recent loss at Ole Miss. A series of suspect play calls and clock mismanagement caused the Tigers to first go backward out of field goal range, then run out of time after they completed a long pass to the Rebels' 5-yard line with 1 second left.

"I certainly understand the criticism," an embattled Miles said this week. "I'm critical myself."

There was a time when 8-3 and a bowl berth was considered a good year at LSU. That changed after Nick Saban's arrival in 2000 and Miles kept the bar high by going 34-6 in his first three seasons.

Last season's 8-5 record seemed like an anomaly, and Miles hoped that bringing in new defensive coordinator John Chavis, along with the development of young quarterback Jordan Jefferson, would elevate LSU back among the SEC's elite.

Instead, LSU (8-3, 4-3 SEC) could finish in fourth place in their division and with a record similar to last year if the Tigers have trouble stopping quarterback Ryan Mallet and Arkansas' SEC-leading offense.

The Razorbacks (7-4, 3-4) average 38 points and 445.2 yards. They have won four straight and will have no lack of confidence coming into Death Valley.

"We have come together the last four weeks," said wide receiver Greg Childs, who leads Arkansas with 40 catches for 738 yards and seven TDs. "We have players that can make plays all across the field. We practice harder now. Every week we try to get better. We're going to go out and try to play our game."

Mallett is the only SEC quarterback to have thrown for 400-plus yards twice this season and has thrown for more than 300 yards five times.

Arkansas has used a host of running backs, racking up 1,721 yards rushing as a team. Led now by Broderick Green, the Razorbacks have continued to run the ball effectively even after Michael Smith's season-ending hamstring injury.

"We have so many guys that can step in and play," Mallett said. "It's an advantage to us and a disadvantage to defenses. They have to prepare for different styles."

Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said it has also helped his players to know they've had LSU's number lately.

"It gives you some confidence," Petrino said. "When you watch the video you're watching the same guys you played against last year. You look at their defense and most of those guys are the exact same guys."

LSU's defense has improved under Chavis, enough so to keep LSU in games even when the offense has sputtered under Jefferson, a sophomore and first-year starter who has played well only in spurts. LSU's offense could be further hampered this weekend now that running back Keiland Williams is out with a broken ankle. He went down only two games after previous starter Charles Scott broke his collarbone. That leaves Stevan Ridley, Trindon Holliday and Russell Shepard as the most likely candidates to run the ball.

If LSU's defense has trouble slowing down Arkansas, LSU's offense could struggle to keep up.

The Tigers could have emotion on their side, though. It will be senior day for a couple dozen players who do not want their last game at Tiger Stadium to be a third-straight loss to the Razorbacks.

"This week's game will be my last memories of Tiger Stadium," senior defensive tackle Charles Alexander said. "We've lost to Arkansas the past two times. It's payback time."

  • Holmes scores 34, Morgan State tops Arkansas 97-94
    posted on November 24, 2009 - 07:30:13 pm

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Reggie Holmes scored 34 points, including a pair of free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining to lead Morgan State past Arkansas 97-94 Tuesday night.

Rotnei Clarke missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Razorbacks after hitting a pair of 3-pointers to keep the game within reach with 14.1 seconds and 6.5 seconds remaining.

Clarke finished with a team-high 26 points. Mike Washington added 21 points and Marshawn Powell and Julysses Nobles scored 17 points each for the Razorbacks (2-2).

Morgan State (4-1) hit 34 of 41 free throws. Holmes sunk 13 of 15 from the line.

The Razorback loss snapped a 45-game winning streak at Bud Walton Arena against nonconference opponents. That was the second-longest streak in the nation.

  • Arkansas-LSU Preview
    posted on November 24, 2009 - 03:50:03 pm

As good as things looked for LSU six weeks ago, coach Les Miles goes into the regular-season finale unable to clean up the mess that has followed.

In contention for the national title not too long ago, the 17th-ranked Tigers try to rebound from their third loss in six games - one that included a series of gaffes - when they host surging Arkansas on Saturday night.

The Tigers (8-3, 4-3 SEC) opened the season with five consecutive wins to climb as high as fourth in the AP poll before losing 13-3 to top-ranked Florida on Oct. 10. They recovered to rout Auburn and Tulane before falling 24-15 at then-No. 3 Alabama on Nov. 7, but struggled to beat woeful Louisiana Tech 24-16 and were dealt a big blow last Saturday.

A number of questionable play calls and suspect clock management led to a 25-23 defeat at unranked Mississippi.

Trailing the Rebels 25-17, LSU scored on Jordan Jefferson's 25-yard pass to Rueben Randle with 1:17 remaining, but the ensuing 2-point conversion attempt failed. The Tigers recovered an onside kick and advanced the ball to Mississippi's 32, but they lost 16 yards on two pass plays and wasted 17 seconds before calling timeout with nine seconds left.

A pass completed to the 5 left LSU with one second remaining, and the team scrambled to the line of scrimmage, where Jefferson spiked the ball and time expired.

"I have an opportunity to represent a great school and a great state," Miles said. "I understand the mistake the head coach made. That will not happen again. I have to get it right. It was my fault.

"I hold the players accountable and I'm accountable to the players. I spoke honestly to the players about my mistake. The strength of a team is a group of men committed to each other. We have a great group of men. This is a difficult time."

The Tigers have fallen out of contention for the SEC title and a BCS bid, so the best they can do is an at-large invite to a marquee bowl.

A win over the Razorbacks (7-4, 3-4) would certainly help, but LSU has dropped the last two meetings by a total of three points. The Tigers blew a 16-point lead in the second half at Arkansas last year, losing 31-30 on a 24-yard TD pass with 21 seconds to play.

This will be the Razorbacks' first trip to Baton Rouge since a triple-overtime thriller, winning 50-48 on Nov. 23, 2007. Still, LSU holds a 33-19-2 advantage in the all-time series.

Jefferson struggled in last year's loss to Arkansas, completing 9 of 21 passes for 143 yards while rushing 19 times for 50 yards. He wasn't overly effective last week, either, going 19 of 37 for 250 yards with nine rushes for minus-32 yards.

The sophomore did throw for two touchdowns but also had an interception after missing the previous game the Louisiana Tech game due to an ankle injury.

His counterpart Saturday is the SEC's highest-rated passer.

Ryan Mallett leads the conference with 3,195 passing yards and a team-record 28 touchdowns with six interceptions.

The sophomore threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Razorbacks to a 42-21 win over Mississippi State last Saturday. That performance came a week after he connected for five TD passes and 405 yards in a 56-20 win over Troy.

Mallett has been named SEC offensive player of the week after each game, and the Razorbacks have won four straight after opening the season by losing four of seven.

"We've won four in a row and we are going into a tough game," Mallett said. "This week we are going to have to play our best football. We are going to have to go in there and play physical and tough."

While Mallett has the offense averaging a conference-best 38.0 points, the defense is the worst in the league, surrendering 408.7 yards per game.

The Razorbacks, though, held the Tigers to 304 total yards last season.

"It gives you some confidence," coach Bobby Petrino said of Arkansas' last two wins over LSU. "When you watch the video you're watching the same guys you played against last year."

  • Arkansas beats Mississippi State 42-21
    posted on November 21, 2009 - 01:00:05 pm

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Ryan Mallett threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns to lead Arkansas over Mississippi State 42-21 on Saturday.

Mallett's final touchdown pass was his 28th of the season, a school record. Clint Stoerner held the old mark of 26.

Anthony Dixon rushed for 176 yards for Mississippi State, which was eliminated from bowl contention.

The Bulldogs (4-7, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) ran all over the Razorbacks (7-4, 3-4) in the third quarter, cutting the Arkansas lead to 28-21 after Dixon's 70-yard scoring run. Mississippi State had the ball near midfield toward the end of the period, but Dixon fumbled and Elton Ford recovered for the Razorbacks.

Mallett threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Greg Childs to make it 35-21 early in the fourth.
