  • I'm back!
    posted on September 12, 2006 - 09:23:42 am

Yahooooo! I've been of the air for quite some time because I haven't had a laptop. About a month ago I sent my beloved 12'' aiBook into apple for service. It was to be a minor repair, my DVD drive was acting up and would not take any disks. The same thing happened last november, and it took no time, so I was hoping for the same thing. Long story short, it wasn't simple. Apple said that there was "warranty voiding damage" to the machine (which there was- there were two nasty dents). But I pointed out to them that these dents were there for the last repair and they hadn't complained to me, plus the part acting up was exactly what was acting up last November so there was no way the damage could have been caused by the dents. After some extended discussions, they agreed with me (thank god- the repair bill was $980!) and said they'd repair the whole thing. Three weeks went by and they couldn't get a part. So they sent me a new MacBook. Unfortunately by this time I had been in Vienna for a week and a half. So my parents had to ship the computer. Fine, but not fine with Austrian customs. I had to go to some building in the boondocks of Vienna and beg for mercy from customs with my meager german skills. Somehow it worked (had it not, I would have had to pay Austria's %20 tax). Then FedEx needed me to actually hand deliver the document (Faxes weren't good enough- this was only made clear two days after the package arrived). Finally today I went to FedEx and got the package out of the depot at the airport! Yahooo! Anyways, it you'd like to see photos from Vienna so far- hear here: http://www.hb3.smugmug.com/vienna/

running the raceI've been of the map for the last three weeks because I've been working at a local horse show videotaping which takes up pretty much all of my time. But that's what you have to do if you want to buy more camera toys! Along the way though I was able to get out for one day to go do Race for the Cure, a race to raise support and awareness for breast cancer. It was particularly awesome because the AP contacted me and asked me to cover it for them! So I photographed for the day and had a blast. When it was all over, I sent in three images to state images (you send the images to them and they send them out to the wire). They liked one (or maybe two?) so much that they actually put them on the national wire! So that means any newspaper in the US that subscribes to the AP (which means pretty much every newspaper) could have used my photo if they wanted to! Pretty cool! So if you want to take a peek at the photos, click onward.

  • Hot day in VT
    posted on July 17, 2006 - 07:44:09 pm

Jumping inToday I went with Justin and Louisa on a trip to defeat the muggy heat. First stop was the Danby Slides, an awesome section of stream where you could slide down on the bare rock. This was awesome! Providing relief from the heat, it served well. But I was also on a higher mission as well. I wanted to try and get a cool photo to submit to the AP. Not that it will matter as the AP guy really doesn't seem to like my photos at all, but what the hell. I had a shot set up in my mind and that shot wasn't at the slides. So we packed up and headed up into the Green Mountains on the Danby Mount Tabor road. We parked and actually followed a two mile section of the Appalachian Trail to reach the pond. It was awesome! The rock jump is only about 10 feet above the water but it proved ample to get the photo I wanted.

  • Fourth of July
    posted on July 04, 2006 - 07:55:58 pm

48 stars??Had a good fourth today! First off went to see a straw bale house (NOT hay bale house, so un PC) which was... well... interesting. The basis is that hay bales form insulation which is covered by a sort of stucco/plaster/mud covering. Fine in the southwest where you get no rain but not so fine here in the northeast (this is a very watered down version of my father's opinion!). Time will tell. After that we went to the Guilford fourth of July parade which was fun as always!

Take a peak, see what you like) and the second half are from spending the middle of the day with my Grandmother, my cousin, and my... cousin in law??? It was fun and I experimented with Jared's labeling style. Another note is how thoroughly pumped I am on the 5d. The quality of the images it produces are just phenomenal. It really does look as if it is film that has been scanned. Not convinced? Take a look at the high res copies on smugmug.

View from HathornFinally! I'm back from my crazy week of horse videos and working at my college's reunion. The reunion was an awesome experience, giving me a new appreciation for Bates as a whole. These were people with lives, not just the wavy future in sight. Instead of perpetually young faces, there were faces with history. Yes there were some boring and annoying parts, but on the whole it was an awesome experience. I hope to do it again next year (Phyllis? Jay? :D). There is slideshow on the Bates website that you can peek at as well, go here for the slideshow and here to see me with the Bobcat!

    posted on June 03, 2006 - 07:15:16 pm

moooooooToday I was assigned by the Rutland Herald / Times Argus to photograph the strolling of the heifers in Brattleboro. The basic idea is that a bunch of cows parade down Main street followed by all sorts of floats. It was awesome! I got such a kick out of both taking photos for the morning and getting paid to do it! The only downside was the rain which made life with two very nice digital cameras quite interesting (adding even more spice was one of them is a brand spanking new and very bankrupting Canon 5d). Hopefully I'll get more freelance assignments this summer, I've already had one last Thursday from the Associated Press, so now I can say I've strung for the AP (although technically I wasn't assigned, I suggested it to the editor and he said I could cover it- it was an opening for a Rembrandt Etching exhibit at our local museum). Hope you like the photos!

the island!Sorry about being so lazy. Guess summer vacation has gotten to me. Anyways, a day after staying for graduation some friends (Emily, Ben, Nicole, and Nicole's father) went out to Emily's family's house on Small Point. If that wasn't nice enough we took a boat out the next day to Seguin Island, a small island about a mile off the coast. It was absolutely awesome! I think the photos can do a better job than I can about describing this! It's quite worthwhile!

    posted on May 23, 2006 - 09:15:00 pm

Pub Crawl!Even though I had a huge looming paper yesterday there was no escaping this event (The paper was in fact completed with safety and is not handed in!). The yearly tradition is that seniors start out by the puddle, run to local bars, down a beer (numbers can vary, usually upwards!), and then run back and all jump in the puddle. I knew Phyllis (the college photographer) was going to get all the land angles so I figured I'd try for something different and managed to scrape up a kayak. It actually turned out to be a bit of a wasted of time as I had a wide angle lens and it was only when I was on the water (or toxic waste, you take your pick!) that I thought of a hundred very inebriated seniors capsizing me. Needless to say, I kept my distance! None the less things turned out well and I had a great time!

Surprisingly there were no mortal injuries and only fun. I'd never been to Tucks and it was absolutely awesome! I didn't feel that the photos were the normal quality but then again I was there to ski and not to get photos. I'm already thinking of angles for next year!

Bates RowersToday I woke my sorry rear end up at 4:50 to go take photos of crew. It turned out to be an awesome experience, especially when the random sun journal man decided not to show up (ask me about it later). Anyways, once the sun was shining and my hastily guzzled frappaccino was working (thank you Gram B!) it was photo time. Boy was it ever, I came back with about 550 photos. Wowza. I've narrowed it down to about 80 so there are still quite a few, but I'd say it's worth it.

  • To Boston we go...
    posted on April 23, 2006 - 11:40:57 am

Well, it's about time I got around to it. Last Thursday my family and I went to Boston to first go to the MFA and then to go to a Sox game. This was especially traumatic for my sister as she is a self proclaimed art "disliker" and a rabid Red Sox fan who will do grievous harm to you if you make the mistake of uttering an unkind syllable against her precious team (her brother has done this a few times and regretted it dearly). So once she had spread her grumptastic likeness all throughout the MFA we escaped into the sunlight, to another museum, to dinner, and then at long last to Fenway. Going to Fenway is an experience like none other. I love it not for the game of baseball itself but for the people watching it affords. People (especially after three or four trips to the beer vendor) are CRAZY! There are also new sights, sounds, and smells at every turn. If you have the chance to go to Fenway (even if you aren't a fan of the Sox) go! It's an experience you won't forget.

On Saturday I went to a bike race nearby in New York. It was simply for the experience it offered. While I found myself cursing my old camera (my nicer one is being repaired) I was still able to learn quite a bit about bike racing and map out good spots for next year. One photo managed to find its way to the front of the local paper! My family will be heading out to Boston on Thursday for a day at the MFA and a Red Sox game at night. My camera equipment will very definitely be making the trip as well. Should be fun!

  • Library at night
    posted on April 07, 2006 - 07:25:18 pm

Anyone who knows me will know that I have reserved an undue amount of venom for "art" photographers (and anyone who knows me even better will know a large amount of this goes to a specific person). Their pompous dismissal of other's hard work and absolute opinion of their own work really ticks me off. I may be a little haughty myself sometimes but at least I'll listen. But in writing my Art History take home test I've been especially attracted to the work of Andreas Gursky. He also might be a pompous SOB but my goodness, his images are beautiful! So in that mood, I set off for the Library at night. Before I got there I had to get an image of P-Gill. It always looks to me like some sinister spaceship that has landed. Call me crazy, call it finals. Take a look if you want.

  • A taste of LA
    posted on April 06, 2006 - 07:21:58 am

Local restaurants came to the Grey Cage to offer food to sample. It was a complete bargain and I had a good time sampling everything I could (samples were fifty cents or a dollar). At first I thought I wouldn't take photos since the school photographer was covering it and my nice camera decided to eat it on Saturday but after half an hour I started to twitch. So I went back a second time and took photos and felt much better. Back to studying.

We just had Gala, the most formal dance of the year. It was quite a bit of fun and I enjoyed myself. My date for the evening was... well... my camera. It was actually quite nice as I had a perfectly acceptable excuse not to exhibit my miserable dancing skills (although I did for a little bit). Overall I was quite pleased and I felt that the shots got better as time progressed ( I was shooting for the first time ever with a real flash).

The photos that came out of this night were head and shoulders above what I have shot so far. They may be a little grainy and a little blurry but I feel that the variety and quality (considering the heinous lighting) is very frikin' awesome! Ok, enough of me blowing my own trumpet. Check them out!

  • Various doings at Bates on a Friday
    posted on March 04, 2006 - 07:58:40 pm

I had just received my (new for me) 10d in the mail, so I was primed to go out and take pictures. The first group of photos was taken in the equipment room, featuring our resident e-room gnome, Jon D. This is interrupted by our wonderfully efficient security forces towing a car. Guess they're stepping things up now. Ye haw. Next thing you know they'll fire an RPG and simply vaporize the thing, it's a lot easier than calling a towtruck. A little oversized silverware at dinner (the salad monster strikes again), then some chess action in P-Gill. And the two awkward photos are because there was a public speaker (on the nature of evil) who was to paranoid to have any photo of him taken. So after a little haggling with the snippy professor who brought him here, I was able to get a photo of people talking. Great, that really gives a wonderful photo for the paper to print. I even tried asking about taking a photo of his back. No cigar, snippy man still was snippy. Relieved to get out in the fresh air away from the hypocrisy of a theoretically "public" talk, I got some photos of frisbee. Quite cheered up, I took off for flava, a Jamaican dinner where I got a few photos. Whew. That should do it.

    posted on February 19, 2006 - 06:50:33 pm

I went to Jiminy Peak on Sunday to capture the Bates Alpine Team in action and was pleasantly rewarded with some nice shots (although not always of Bates skiers, oh well). I was overall more pleased with the results than the Nordic. I'm not sure whether this was because I'm no stranger to Alpine races, or simply the more planned out shots that Alpine demands. I also got in a heck of a lot more exercise- I hiked up the entire hill twice and thanked my lucky stars that I had gotten some krampons from the e-room, or I would have had no chance against the ice.

  • Williams Carnival
    posted on February 17, 2006 - 06:05:02 pm

Went to the Williams Carnival today and took some photos for the communications office. Some came out better than others and I'm glad I'll have a second chance (hopefully) at Middlebury. It was a lot of fun though, we had quite an entertaining time. A storm blew in which took down a tree on the course and produced at least three (very visible) bolts of lighting. Kinda strange but no one got fried so all was well.

This was a quick 10 minute job but I was quite pleased with the results. They weren't award winning, but they were all presentable tight shots. I was sorry that I couldn't stay for the whole thing. It was very interesting but the siren song of Deutsch homework was calling!

This Sunday Bates had its annual International Dinner. Well worth the $10 to get in, it consisted of meals that the International students had (somehow, I don't know where!) cooked from their homeland. The meal was spectacular, the people were wonderful, and now my shutter finger hurts! There are quite a few "candids" and images that look similar, but I think it's well worth the wade to click on.

This is a bit of a compilation of images. The first of the images are from a photoshoot I did for the paper. It's a little more "cool" than I normally shoot, but I like it. Second is from a concert last night for Mozart's 250th birthday. The young guy is Duncan Cumming and the white hair is Frank Glazer. Third is from a walk Brooke and I took today in Lewiston (proving that you can indeed spend more than an hour outside of the confines of the Bates campus and not get mugged! Wow!). We stopped by the Lewiston Basilica, took a few pictures, and meandered on our way.

It was a good thing that I took pictures first because by the time I had worked feeling back into my toes in the shower, the sun had set. Assides from being comfortibly numb it was a very nice experience. posted on January 18, 2006 - 11:44:00 am

This actually happened last Friday, just before I was supposed to leave for home for a ski race. I was reminded of the photos when I went to the gym today and found that it to had a fire alarm, complete with disgruntled swimmers from the pool and firefighters in full garb. That was because of a faulty sensor, I'm not sure what caused the Smith fire (although given the dorm's reputation, it might have been something other than a faulty sensor).

  • MLK day photos
    posted on January 17, 2006 - 02:38:51 pm

We had some MLK day activities today. I had planned to attend a few, but the keynote completely turned me off. It was neither enlightening or interesting. But I was lucky enough to recover by 7:30 to see Chauncey Packer perform. His performance didn't drop me to my feet, but it was far from making me run out screaming, as the morning did.

  • The sun was shining!
    posted on January 11, 2006 - 10:02:48 am

We had a break from the bleak Maine winter yesterday. The sun was shining and the temperature cracked above freezing! To celebrate, I went to the noon time Frank Glasier concert, took photos of students sculpting in the snow, and finally took pictures of (and in return participated in) a small match of winter soccer.

  • A Monday night out
    posted on January 09, 2006 - 08:08:45 pm

Everyone's returned to their studies with a stunning speed. Tonight I went out for a few minutes and got some night air to distract myself an art history teacher who thinks it is fun to cause pain through ridiculous amounts of unintelligible reading.

  • Burlington Taiko
    posted on January 07, 2006 - 08:55:53 pm

It was another wonderful night at Bates. The entertainment was Burlington Taiko, but forget entertainment, it was enthraling! I had to kick myself a few times to remember that I was there to take photos and not to gawk google eyed as numerous drums pounded away. Taiko is "revival of ancient drumming traditions" (straight from the brocure). I think I'll leave it at that, because the experience is beyond words. So check out the pictures. Because I managed to fill both my memory cards, they're two options for viewing. The best 9 photos are here and the 78 that I like are here

  • Kenny Garrett Concert
    posted on January 06, 2006 - 07:10:50 pm

Wow, today has definitely been the marathon photo session. There was a Kenny Garrett concert that was absolutely out of this world. So armed with the new lens and a monopod, many photos were mine!

  • Francophile Fondu
    posted on January 06, 2006 - 05:23:51 pm

Quite a few of you probably know that I am no fan of the French nation (more specifically the french language and the people who teach it!). I know this is completely irrational, but sometimes high school does that to ya. Tonight was one small (actually, probably large) step in the right direction. The Francophile club was holding a fondu dinner and the promise of a break from commons (already) lured me in. The food was extremely good and I actually enjoyed myself with people speaking french around me! Here are some wide angle shots to get you in the mood.

Today marked the arrival of my brand spankin' new 15mm fisheye and 70-200 zoom lens. To celebrate the occasion I tracked a bunch of friends down to the puddle and proceeded to shoot an obscene amount of photos. Here are some of the best.

After the final push for exams, I was rewarded with a trip back to Vermont. The first thing I did was to go help out with the high school race that happened on the day I got back. Here are a few pictures, hopefully practice shots for what's to come!

  • Vacation: Killington Hike
    posted on November 21, 2005 - 07:39:39 pm

It turned out the only 4,000 foot mountain left that Bates students hadn't climbed in VT in the '05-'06 year was Killington. So in our quest to hike all 4,000 footers in New England, it had to be done. It was a great hike, fun and surprisingly short, leaving some time for a BBA visit.

Last night was the fabled Harvest Dinner at Commons. It was absolutely delightful and I narrowly avoided stuffing myself so full that I couldn't move (Think Thanksgiving). But thanks to some last minute reasoning and only two deserts instead of three I was able to walk around and get a few of the sights inside my faithful camera.

I went to the State XC championships a month ago at Colby and took photos for Bates (I got to use a 70-200mm Ć’2.8 lens!). I just found them on the site and they turned out nicer than I remember (was someone doing a little PS tinkering?). So have a look if you want to! It's good stuff.

  • Visit to Iron Works
    posted on November 10, 2005 - 05:26:53 pm

Yesterday my Anatomy of Small Machines class took another wonderful field trip. This time the destination was quite local, the Enterprise Iron Works in Lewiston. It was absolutely facinating. While our guide had volumes of information to tell us, it was hard to hear over the roar of all the machenery. But what a sight! The iron being poured into the molds was absolutely amazing, it felt like we were in another world. I'm pretty happy with the pictures I got, so click onward!

  • Visit to Brandeis and Boston
    posted on November 07, 2005 - 06:25:52 pm

Just had a wonderful weekend where I went to see Brooke at Brandeis. On saturday I watched the Brandeis vs. NYU game (Brandeis won, 2-1) and then Brooke and I went into boston to see the new Warren Miller film in Boston (very commercial, but it's forgiven with the jaw dropping cinematography that captures the beauty of skiing where the snow is always perfect and the skies are always blue). We finished up the night with some Thai food and a walk around the MIT campus. On Sunday we went into Cambridge to see Clem at Harvard. We all went to the wonderful Degas exhibition at the Sackler gallery. Before our departure Brooke and I took a walk and gawk of the campus behind Clem. Wow! The only thing I could compare the campus to was Hogwarts from Harry Potter (thanks Clem!). It felt like there was magic all about. With the brief field trip over, I hopped back in the car and zoomed up to what's starting to feel like home: Bates!

  • Another nice day!
    posted on October 31, 2005 - 07:20:22 pm

It feels like a miracle, but we've had three nice days in a row! The leaves were too spectacular to miss, so I spent a bit of my day photographing them. First of a frisbee game and then of leaf pile jumping event in the afternoon. Both were great fun, providing both a test of camera technical talent and of tree climbing skills (I'll try and get a picture of me up there from someone in the future!). Almost all of these images were shot in RAW format, so there's quite a bit of doctoring. It's probably a bit severe (I'm kinda new at it), but it gets the point across just fine.

  • Tubledown Hike
    posted on October 29, 2005 - 07:27:17 pm

Today was another wonderful day! The sun was out and a few friends and I took off for Tumbledown, about an two hour's drive north of Bates. It was highly worth it, we all had a wonderful time clambering upward to an Alpine lake lined with snow. It being the opening day of gun hunting season we had festively decorated ourselves with orange and made lots of sounds that only the stupidest hunter could have mistaken for a deer. There are lots of "buddy" shots but they're still worth a look if you're interested.

  • Sun!
    posted on October 27, 2005 - 02:00:25 pm

Finally today, after what seemed like an eternity of rain and crummy weather, the skies broke and we were bathed in blue sky! So exciting. I was going to commons, thinking about taking some photos in the nice day and then found that I wasn't the only one who had the same idea! Phyllis (the college's official Photographer and all around photo guru) was perched high on a cherrypicker-like machine ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting student who wandered near. Ever wondered how all of those nice Bates brochure pictures are taken from seemingly impossible angles? Well click on. (The two pictures inside are from a Meathead ski film that came to Bates. It was quite entertaining!)

  • BBA Apple Picking Pictures
    posted on October 21, 2005 - 06:40:29 pm

I came back from Bates for October break and definitely realized why I missed it so much. Call me pompous, but Vermont is so much better than Maine! (although technically, most of these pictures were taken just across the border in New York). Our family is hosting an exchange student from Germany for two weeks and on my second day back I was assigned to help out on a trip to go apple picking. I think more apples were used as very hard projectiles than were actually picked but the Germans seemed to enjoy themselves and I obtained quite a few pictures (with quite a few strange glances) so all was well.

  • Mt. Washington Climb
    posted on September 25, 2005 - 08:41:42 am

Today I took a LOT of pictures climbing up Mt. Washington (highest peek east of the Mississippi, woo hoo!). The group of pictures I'd recommend seeing is this group (72 photos). It doesn't have repeats and gives the full picture. I usually run about 1 good picture per 3 shots, so there are 97 images (this has quite a few repeats) in the large gallery. If you don't want to go through all of them, just head over to the 16 image gallery and take in the Mt. Washington lite version. So just to make this a little less complicated 16 photos 72 photos 97 photos

  • Red Sox Game!
    posted on September 17, 2005 - 01:15:58 pm

Bates sent a bus down to a recent Sox Game (vs. the Oakland A's) and it was a field day for me. I probably spent 2/3 of the time exploring and taking pictures and 1/3 actually watching. While I'm by no means a big baseball fan, it was a truly amazing experience. Walking out into the stadium from one of the entrance tunnels is an incredible first time experience. The light and sound is simply an overload of all senses! And not only that, this was Fenway! Click onward for about 50 pictures. The first, a panorama is available in it's original size. • Night (or some of it) at Bates
    posted on September 16, 2005 - 07:54:49 pm

Justin and I decided to take a hike up Mt. Greylock in Williamstown (I'm not completely sure it's "in" Williamstown, but it's close enough). We drove up a little ways, parked and then spent the next hour and a half speed-walking our way to the top. At the summit we were greeted by hordes of clueless New Jerseyites who had driven all the way up. After looking round for a bit (Including climbing up inside the wonderfully wacky war memorial) we decided to head back down the trail. For more info on Greylock, go here.
